In a high concentration ofwater the amount of solute (e.g. sugar) is downhearted. This could be called aweak or dilute solution. In a low concentration of water the amount ofsolute (e.g. sucrose) is high. This could be called a strong orconcentrated solution. When two such solutions are divided by apartially permeable membrane the water will move from the force field of highconcentration to the area of low concentration, until both sides are passable (have reached equilibrium).Knowing that osmosis will occur across a partially permeable membranewhenever there is a difference between the water concentrations on thetwo sides of the membrane, and knowing that when this happens to cellsthey will either become turgid if water flows into them, or flaccid ifwater flows out of them, and thus change their volume, we extremity to testthe hypothesis thatIf the concentration of a solution into which a piston chamber of potato isplaced is greater than a certain level the piston chamber will contract, andif the concentration is less than that level it will expand. The cellmembrane in cells is partially permeable and the vacuole contains asugar/salt solution. So when a cell is placed in distilled water (highwater concentration) water will move across the partially permeablemembrane into the cell (lower water concentration) by osmosis, makingthe cell swell. This cell is now referred to as turgid. If d one withpotato cells the cells would incr ease in volume and mass because ofthe senseless water. If these potato cells were placed in a solution witha low water concentration, then the opposite would happen. Water wouldmove out of the cell into the solution. In extreme cases the cellmembrane breaks away from the cell border and the cell is referred to asflaccid. Moreover, I would like to see ifand when the cells reach a maximum and minimum weight.Temperature could also be changed, for example the samples could beplaced in different test tubes at different temperatures to see iftemperature played its part in the osmosis of potatoes. 5 sets of 3potatoes could be placed in test tubes at 10oC, 20oC, 30oC, 50oC and60oC. wheref ore leave them for 24 hours making sure all the variables inthe low gear experiment still apply however just using one molarsolution. Then after 24 hours re-weigh the samples and record theresult. I would promise that at high temperatures the potato sampleswould gain the most weight. This is because at high temperatures thewater molecules would move faster and therefore equal theconcentration faster. A preliminary experiment could be set upbeforehand to scram out how long the experiment should be kept goingbecause if the concentration of the potatoes equalises then the weightof the potatoes will be almost exactly the same.
